Veblen and Darwinism

چکیده
The aim of this article is to show how Veblen understood and applied Darwinian principles to his analysis of the evolution of socio-economic institutions. At the core of Darwinism is a commitment to causal explanation, which Veblen adopted while not undermining his appreciation of the distinctively purposeful nature of human action. In addition, Veblen applied the Darwinian principles of variation, inheritance and selection to institutional evolution. However, despite his achievement, he did not develop an adequate or systematic theory in this area.

Veblen Hierarchy Grzegorz
The Veblen hierarchy is an extension of the construction of epsilon numbers (fixpoints of the exponential map: ω = ). It is a collection φα of the Veblen Functions where φ0(β) = ω and φ1(β) = β . The sequence of fixpoints of φ1 function form φ2, etc. For a limit non empty ordinal λ the function φλ is the sequence of common fixpoints of all functions φα where α < λ. The Mizar formalization of th...
متن کاملWell-partial-orderings and the big Veblen number
In this article we characterize a countable ordinal known as the big Veblen number in terms of natural well-partially ordered tree-like structures. To this end, we consider generalized trees where the immediate subtrees are grouped in pairs with address-like objects. Motivated by natural ordering properties, extracted from the standard notations for the big Veblen number, we investigate differe...
متن کاملDarwinism in economics: from analogy to ontology
Several social scientists, including ‘evolutionary economists’, have expressed scepticism of ‘biological analogies’ and rejected the application of ‘Darwinism’ to socio-economic evolution. Among this group, some have argued that self-organisation is an alternative to biological analogies orDarwinism.Others have seen ‘artificial selection’ as an alternative to natural selection in the socio-econ...
متن کاملOrigins of the myth of social Darwinism: The ambiguous legacy of Richard Hofstadter’s Social Darwinism in American Thought
The term “social Darwinism” owes its currency and many of its connotations to Richard Hofstadter’s influential Social Darwinism in American Thought, 1860–1915 (SDAT). The postSDATmeanings of “social Darwinism” are the product of an unresolvedWhiggish tension in SDAT: Hofstadter championed economic reform over free markets, but he also condemned biology in social science, this while many progres...
